Outside of maybe wings, eh you can never have too many wings… The Celtics could add depth at any position. We saw against Miami that coach Stevens was afraid to go any further down the bench than Grant Williams, who played great minutes for us, but it’s not going to cut it next year against a KD/Kyrie duo in Brooklyn, or whatever Milwaukee decides throws at us. SO we need upgrades, but who are we able to sign with the money we have? Let’s take a look…

The Celtics don’t have much room to make upgrades this offseason as the team has the Mid Level Exception of $5.7 million and the Veterans minimum contract. There’s virtually no shot that Gordon Hayward opts out of the last year of his $34.1 million dollar contract. Let’s take a look at some potential free agents at each position for the Celtics to sign.

Free Agents: Point Guard

Trey Burke – TREY BURKE FOR THREEEEEEEEEEE!!!!! I can hear it now, Burke is a sharpshooter that you could insert into any lineup. He’s 27 years old, entering his prime and the Celtics can get him at a discount. AVG: 7.4 PPG, 1.5 RPG, 2.5 APG, 0.5 SPG (45/43/79)

Rajon Rondo – A Rondo reunion could make him the first player to ever win a ring with the Celtics, then Lakers, then Celtics again… But seriously, the veteran leadership and playmaking ability could help Boston raise banner 18. AVG: 7.1 PPG, 3.0 RPG, 5.0 APG, 0.8 SPG (42/33/66)

Free Agents: Shooting Guard

Alec Burks – Burks is a diamond in the rough as he has had a difficult time fitting for most of the teams he plays for. His shooting ability and quickness keep him in the NBA, and he would be a huge help to bench scoring. AVG: 15.0 PPG, 4.3 RPG, 2.9 APG, 0.9 SPG (42/39/89)

Marco Belinelli – His shooting would improve the Celtics’ bench scoring as he would become one of the best shooters on the team the minute he signs. AVG: 6.3 PPG. 1.7 RPG, 1.2 APG, 0.2 SPG (39/38/83)

Jordan McRae – Jordan put up a season-high 35 points in a game for the Washington Wizards and could be a spark off the bench for us in Boston. AVG: 11.5 PPG, 3.4 RPG, 2.5 APG, 0.6 SPG (41/36/76)

Free Agents: Small Forward

Evan Turner – E.T had a great impact in the locker room for the Celtics a few years back during the short rebuild and bringing him back would add veteran leadership. AVG: 3.3 PPG, 2.0 RPG, 2.0 APG (37/0/86)

Danilo Gallinari – Boston has been linked to Gallinari in almost every trade deadline since he entered the league so let’s finally unite these two. For it to happen, Danilo would have to take a championship team discount and sign for the MLE of $5.7 million. Gallinari said that he was at the point of his career where he wants to compete for a championship so this may actually happen! AVG: 18.7 PPG, 5.2 RPG, 1.9 APG, 0.7 SPG (44/41/89)

Free Agents: Power Forward

Paul Millsap – Millsap is another guy who would need to take a sizeable pay cut in order for it to work out. Coming off of making $30 million per year, Millsap would have to cut $25 mil out and compete for a title. AVG: 11.6 PPG, 5.7 RPG, 1.6 APG, 0.9 SPG, 0.6 BPG (48/44/82)

Harry Giles – Adding one of Jayson Tatum’s best friends to the team would be fun and although Giles would be a project for the Celtics, I think the link between him and Tatum would benefit Giles’ on-court production. AVG: 6.9 PPG, 4.1 RPG, 1.3 APG, 0.5 SPG, 0.4 BPG (56/0/78)

Serge Ibaka – We wouldn’t be getting the same Ibaka that was sensational in OKC or even the one we saw in Toronto as this Ibaka would be even older. He’d be asked to come off the bench and split minutes with guys like Grant and Robert Williams and Theis. AVG: 15.4 PPG, 8.2 RPG, 1.4 APG, 0.5 SPG, 0.8 BPG (52/39/72)

Free Agents: Center

Aron Baynes – My personal favorite, Aron Baynes. I know we did him kinda dirty last year by having him opt into a tradeable contract and then shipped him off to Phoenix but he said he still loves Boston. Baynes immediately adds defense, intensity, and shooting ability. Coming off his best season, AB would turn the Celtics into instant title favorites. AVG: 11.5 PPG, 5.6 RPG, 1.6 APG, 0.2 SPG, 0.5 BPG (48/35/75)

Tristan Thompson – Asking a player worth $15 mil + to play for the MLE is never an easy conversation but I think Thompson would be willing to bet on himself this year to win a championship with Boston, getting revenge on LeBron, and then collecting a larger paycheck in the next free agency as this upcoming NBA season could be shortened as well. AVG: 12.0 PPG, 10.1 RPG, 2.1 APG, 0.6 SPG, 0.9 BPG (51/39/62)

Willie Cauley-Stein – Cauley-Stein has a player option with the Mavericks but the contract is only worth $2.3 million and he may opt-out to take a deal with Boston to compete in the Eastern Conference. His quickness adds defense and above the rim scoring. AVG: 7.2 PPG, 5.8 RPG, 1.3 APG, 0.9 SPG, 1.1 BPG (58/0/61)

Favorite Free Agents:

My top potential free agents at each position for the Celtics to sign are:

C: Aron Baynes

PF: Serge Ibaka

SF: Danilo Gallinari

SG: Alec Burks
